Art history is a fascinating and profound field of study, but for many, delving into this realm can be initially perplexing. The teaching approach of this course lies in breaking down the complex concepts of art history into more digestible parts, gradually guiding students into the realm of art and nurturing their ability to appreciate art.
When discussing contemporary art and modern art, the course will elucidate the connections and distinctions between these two concepts. Students will understand how art evolves with time and societal changes, delving deeply into the cultural, historical, and societal backgrounds behind art pieces.
This course will delve into intriguing questions, such as why seemingly ordinary objects can become art classics, like Duchamp's urinal. Simultaneously, students will explore the relationship between artists' lives and their works, answering queries like "Are all artists mad?" or "Are they truly impoverished?" Especially through in-depth analyses of renowned artists like Picasso and their works and statements, students will gain insightful perspectives on why these artists are highly esteemed.
Most importantly, this course is not solely about imparting knowledge but also about cultivating students' ability to self-appreciate art. Through training and practice, students will learn to understand and evaluate art from broader perspectives, enabling them to confidently appreciate and comprehend the essence of art instead of feeling lost or bewildered at art exhibitions.
In summary, this course, through engaging discussions, in-depth analyses, and practical appreciation, aims to lead students into the world of art history, empowering them not only to become experts in understanding art but also to navigate the oceans of art with ease and confidence.
